About

Hi! I’m Jin. I love to study the human mind, and I’m passionate about using this knowledge to make the world at least a little bit better for everyone. More specifically, I’m interested in the psychology of morality, altruism, and social influence, as well as the application of psychology to sustainability problems.

I’m currently earning my Masters degree in Applied Statistics while collaborating on a project investigating how people's climate change beliefs have shifted over time. I’m open to more collaborations, so please don’t hesistate to reach out!

I recently was the post-baccaleaurate lab manager at the Social Cognitive & Neural Science Lab @ Columbia University. I graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park, in May 2022, where I studied Neuroscience with a minor in Sustainability Studies. During my time there, I spent two years as a research assistant in a developmental lab. My work studying the neural development of infant temperament eventually culminated into an honors thesis.

Outside of the lab, I love to be creative. Whether it’s painting, sewing, or pottery, I get a lot of joy using my hands to create something beautiful and useful! Click here to jump to my portfolio below! (under construction)

In my free time, you can find me lifting, rock climbing, cooking, or reading a book.

Research

Interests

My future research will ask:

How can insights from psychology and neuroscience be leveraged to solve pressing global challenges such as sustainability?

What makes sustainability such a "wicked" problem, and how do we even begin to tackle it? I hope to approach this issue from a psychological perspective. By investigating the cognitive basis of social norms, cultural change, morality, and altruism, I hope to elucidate the most effective actions for ensuring a happier, healthier planet for generations to come.

Education

B.S., Neuroscience (minor: Sustainability Studies)

2018 - 2022

University of Maryland, College Park, MD

Honors Thesis: "The Link Between Infant Amygdala Connectivity and Behavioral Inhibition", Defended with High Honors

PI: Nathan Fox, Mentor: Courtney Filippi

As an undergraduate research assistant:

  • Assisted with in-lab infant/toddler behavioral and imaging data collection, and behavioral coding of infant reactivity.
  • Completed preprocessing, quality checks, and statistical analysis of fMRI data using MATLAB and R.
  • Developed and defended an honors thesis investigating the relationship between amygdala functional connectivity in infants and a risk factor for anxiety.

Experience

Lab Manager, Social Cognitive & Neural Sciences Lab

2022 - 2023

Columbia University, New York, NY

PI: Jon Freeman

  • Improved efficiency of lab activities through maintenance of lab servers, hiring and training research assistants, launching web experiments, handling lab finances and IRB, and keeping lab websites up to date.
  • Applied Hidden Markov Modeling (HMM) for event segmentation of continuous ratings for study investigating the neural mechanisms of dynamic personality perception.
  • Developed scripts in R and Python for streamlining data cleaning and analysis, generating stimuli.

Head Research Assistant, Social Identity & Morality Lab

2022

New York University, New York, NY

PI: Jay Van Bavel, Mentor: Diego Reinero

  • Enthusiastically led a team of 7 undergraduate research assistants to collect data via online experiments, clean data using a Ruby script and Excel, and improve organization Recruited and communicated with 50+ participants via SONA.
  • Managed up to 5 projects or tasks at a given time while under pressure
  • Recommended and consulted with clients on the most appropriate graphic design
  • Created 4+ design presentations and proposals a month for clients and account managers
